Hotels
The Malika Classic hotel is a cozy hotel with unique architecture and good facilities. This traditional-style built private hotel presents the finest Uzbek woodcrafts. Inspired by the splendor of Uzbek historic monuments, the master craftsmen of Samarkand have excelled in capturing the spirit of older days, applying traditional techniques to a modern architectural structure. The location is the only downside, it is quite far from everything, so either be prepared to have a good walk, or get the reception staff to write your destination in Russian and walk down to the main street and flag a car down.
It takes full 30 minutes to walk to Amir Timur square, from which it is another ten minutes to the tourist epicenter (Registan Square). In the 40 degree plus heat such a walk would be only feasible to fit people, whilst others should rely on taxis – happily they are very cheap ($1,5-2) and abundant.
Also, be aware that there are two different Malika hotels in Samarqand. This is particularly irritating when you want to return to the hotel, as many taxi drivers seem to be unaware that this second Malika hotel exists. Expect to take taxis everywhere other than the immediate residential neighborhood. It is in the middle of the old Russian cantonment, with lots of Russian colonial architecture. There is attractive Islamic-style courtyard and use of local design elements. The only other negative other than the location is that there is no internet access available at the property. There is no lack of places to eat nearby. Location of the hotel is in a residential area quite far away from the main attractions. Some tourists likepeaceful atmosphere of the hotel after noisy sightseeing tour day.
