Sherdor Hotel was built in traditional Uzbek style and has all the modern facilities for the convenience of foreign guest. It is a rather new building erected in 2004 and located in the centre of Samarkand; about 30 minutes drive from the International Airport. Hotel offers a beautiful view over the famous Polish Church, and situated close to the historical, cultural and entertainment sights of Samarkand. Street is very quiet and relatively close to Timur Street with lots of good local open air cafes and restaurants such as Karimbek.
It is a bit longish 20-25 minute walk to the Registan, but a taxi is inexpensive and seems to cost less if you let the staff order one by phone. There is friendly, very helpful and attentive staff, taking care of you round the clock.They would be happy to assist you with planning your sightseeing and finding suitable transportation.
Accommodation at Sherdor hotel
Rooms are fine, very clean, with comfortable beds and large bathrooms. Design of rooms is pretty, with old pictures on walls and bowls/plates around.The courtyard rooms are good, but in rooms 1 and 2 you can hear everything that is going on in the reception area.
Sometimes there is a problem with lack of hot water when needed. But hotel stuff quickly resolves this problem.It would take 10-15 min of running before the water gets hot. Also, the gas pressure is low so it would take 15-20 min for them to boil water for the tea. It's not the hotel's fault really, but perhaps the management can learn and finally buy basic electric teapots.
Dining at Sherdor hotel
Breakfast is decent –tea, pancakes, bread, eggs, fruit etc. and plenty of it.Hotel restaurant is one of the finest restaurants in Samarkand and offers kosher, European and traditional Uzbek meals.It is indeed nice to be able to sit in the courtyard area and leisurely eating a watermelon and drinking local favorite green tea and coffee (or a cold drink from the next-door shop).There is bar in the lobby.
Facilities of Sherdor hotel
There is full complement of massage services, spa treatments, and nice swimming pool. You can also visit Sherdor Sauna that is good one.But you'd better ask for it beforehand. There is no internet, or business centre as advertised on their website, but they would let you use the computer in reception if you needed to check e-mails. There are several internet places just around the corner which are cheap and have good connections.
