The Great Silk Road passed through this land making famous the cities of Tashkent, Samarqand and Bukhara. Tashkent is now a modern city and the Capital of Uzbekistan. It is also the largest city in Central Asia. Samarqand and Bukhara are known for monuments from the bygone days. Minarets and mausoleums, mosques and madrassahs of the remarkable brick and tile structures - masterpieces of many constructors and artisans. One of the largest open-air museums is Khiva, near Urgench. It is the most preserved ensemble of all the ancient Central Asian settlements.

Samarqand - Registan square - the "Sandy place ". The Square is surrounded by the Ulugbek's madrassah (1417-1420), the Sher-Dor madrassah (1619-1636), and Tilla-Kori madrassah (1647-1660), Mosque Bibi-Khanum (15 c.), Gur Emir Mausoleum - (graves of Tamerlane and his descendants, 15c.), Shakhi-Zina - ensemble of mausoleums of the 11th-19th centuries, The main bazaar, Afrosiyab Museum (Early Samarkand excavations), Ulugbek Observatory (15th century partly saved from destruction), etc.
Bukhara - Complex Lyabi-Khauz (16th-17th cc.) Mausoleum Chor Minor (Medressa with four peculiar looking towers).
Ensemble Poi Kalian (Big Minaret from the 12th century.), Madrassah Miri-Arab (One of the largest educational institutions of the 16th century ), Mosque Djuma ( cathedral mosque, with unique acoustics) , Madrassah of Ulugbek (1417 was built by the order of Ulugbek), Mosque Magoki Attari.
