Cemetery and Mausoleum of Pahlavon Mahmud
Pahlavan Makhmud was a doctor-poet-wrestler in the 14th C- he died in 1320. The mausoleum was completely rebuilt between 1810 and 1835 and is regarded as the most beautiful building in Khiva. He is rumoured to have written anti-religious poems in Persian under a pseudonym; the rumour was suppressed by the Muslim clergy in his time and the link between him and the poems was only rediscovered in 1840.He was unbeatable as a wrestler. Iranian professional wrestlers still offer prayers to him before a fight. It doesn't seem to be on record as to whether he exercised his medical skills on mangled defeated opponents.
