The arrangement has been reached between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan according to which within three years the first Afghan railway branch will be maintained by the Uzbek party. The corresponding Agreement has been signed between state-joint-stock railway company «Uzbekistan Railways» and the Ministry of public works of Afghanistan.
The given railway line connects Hayraton station on the Uzbek-Afghan border with Mazari-Sharif airport. The second railway branch lasting from the east of this country in a direction of Herat still is under the construction. In the future is planned to carry out transportation of cargoes and the goods, and is supposed realization of passenger transportations on a new railway way.
According to the arrangement of the Uzbek and Afghani parties state-joint-stock railway company «Uzbekistan Railways» will be the general operator in use of a railway branch of Hayraton - Mazari-Sharif, carrying out its commercial operation. Building of the 75-kilometer railway by total cost $129 million has been finished in February, 2011. Annually it will be possible to pass about 9 million tons of cargoes on the first Afghan railway.
