Uzbek-British Trade Council holds session in Tashkent

A session of the Uzbek-British Council on trade and industry was held in Tashkent on 9 December 2010.

Heads of ministries and departments, companies and concerns of two states, responsible for foreign economic activity, oil and gas, trade and industry, investment, science and education, tourism, chemical industry, food industry, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and water management participated at the event. 

Co-chairman of the Uzbek-British Council on trade and industry Hartley Booth stated that Uzbekistan has great opportunity in agriculture sector. 

He said: “We are planning to realize many projects in this direction. I made many visits to ancient and beautiful cities of Bukhara and Samarkand. Participation of tourism companies in the event opened favorable opportunities for further cooperation to this directions.” 

During the session, participants exchanged opinion on economic potential and opportunities in Uzbekistan and Great Britain. Special attention was paid to issues on increasing bilateral trade, number of joint venture and assortment of produced goods.

The sides also discussed issues of implementing high-technological joint projects in Navoi free industrial-economic zone.

Trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Great Britain grew by 24.43% year-on-year to US$147.7 million in January-September 2010. At the same time, Uzbekistan’s exports to Great Britain made up US$94.2 million.

Currently, number of enterprises, created in cooperation with British investors, makes up 372. Some 109 British enterprises opened their representative offices in Uzbekistan. The enterprises work in such sectors as food, construction material, processing of agriculture goods, insurance and consulting.
