The event was organized with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Uzbekistan, the Uzbekistan-Japan Center, and the Japan Club, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Representative of the World Association of Bon Odori Mr. Shigetada Kayyumi also arrived for this festival from Japan.
Bon Odori is a popular Japanese dance, which takes place from the beginning of summer till autumn in all Japanese regions. Religious ritual dance combined with the tradition of meeting the spirits of ancestors "Bon", which commemorates deceased people, and gradually transformed into the current style of dance.
At this festival, people are gathering, dressed in yukata (summer kimono) and holding a special fan (ugava) and Japanese towel (tenugui). A typical bon-odori is a dance around a high wooden structure called "Yagura" (tower), erected specially for the festival, under which hang large number of glowing lanterns. Yagura serves as a platform for musicians and singers. Dancers can move around the Yagura. Because of dance is very simple everyone can freely participate.
