Opening ceremony of Astronomy Museum took place in Tashkent on December 16, 2009

Opening of astronomy museum is appeared to be as a completing event of wide range of business actions spread across the republic during the year. It was also announced by United Nations as an International year of Astronomy 2009. 

Astronomy museum’s new exposition is presented with the assistance of UNESCO. Model of the main tool from the Ulugbek’s observatory “Meridional Quadrant” is exposed in this museum. Students are able to get acquainted with the process of ground-based astronomy, which was carried out through Ulugbek’s observatory.

Also representatives of Uzbekistan at UNESCO and embassy of Uzbekistan in cooperation with astronomical community held a conference dedicated to Ulugbek’s scientific heritage in November month of the present year in Paris.

New museum is acting under the astronomical institute at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, which is the oldest scientific institution in the whole Central Asian region. It was founded in 1873 as Tashkent’s astronomical observatory and modified in 1966 as an Astronomical institute.
