Uzbek Suzani makes a conspicuous figure in Berlin.

The Islamic art museum in Berlin is hosting the exhibition about ornamental embroidery of oriental nations – “Suzani”. Islamic art museum in Berlin is one of the biggest museums of applied art in Europe with exhibits of 8-9th centuries from Egypt, Middle East, Iran, India and other Asian countries on display. 

Exhibition inauguration presentation emphasized that Suzani were widely used in many cultures of the Orient. This method of embroidery is especially associated with Central Asian region. In this respect this exhibition is a good opportunity to learn more about decorative embroidery traditions of the Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan. 
Dr. Dittmer Pelts, well known Dutch expert in this area made «Central Asian Suzanis and pattern allocation methods» presentation. He told about the history of Suzani and embroidery methods used.

He also mentioned that the West got a chance to learn about the Suzani and embroidery techniques more closely only after Central Asian countries got their independence. Dr. Pelts noted that the brightest and the most valuable Suzanis in in the Central Asia are considered to be the Uzbek ones. Each region has its traditions and techniques for embroidery, which are mainly distinguished by patterns.
