Minarets of Bukhara

One of the main tourist attractions in Uzbekistan is the minarets of Bukhara. This year Kaljan Minaret was chosen as the most known minaret in Uzbekistan by foreign tourists. Many foreign tourists coming to Bukhara emphasize its beauty and magnificent structure.

“Kaljan” Minaret is a part of beautiful architectural ensemble - Poi Kaljan that was built by architect Bako in 1127. The minaret the height of which is 47,5 m is a source of pride for people of Bukhara for nearly 900 years.

The skilful artisan from Bukhara, the laureate of the State Award of the Republic of Uzbekistan Alim Abdiev revealed what preserved Kaljan Minaret in a good condition up to nowadays: “the secret of minaret’s longevity is in its base which goes deep into earth for up to 10 meters. Historical sources mention that after base construction architect Bako was resting it for the whole year. Only after he was convinced of its durability, he authorized the construction of the rest of the tower. “

The Kaljan minaret was built from ordinary clay and bricks. It is still one of the best examples of ancient architecture that survived till our times. This building can impress everyone with chains of octahedral stars and sacred inscriptions used to decorate it. Minaret is around 9 meters in diameter. The Bridge-transition connect the minaret with a mosque of Kaljan through which it is possible to get into the tower from the narrow and abrupt stairs having 105 steps, the height of each makes 50 cm. The top of tower is similar to headdress.

In the past the minaret of Kaljan played an important role serving as a lighthouse for caravans, travelers and also as an observation tower.
